Water Pokémon Introduction: Water Pokémon are one of the most common types in R/B/Y. In general their stats vary a lot, unlike other types. Psychic Pokémon tend to have very high special, Electric Pokémon tend to have very high speed, Rock type Pokémon tend to have very high defense etc. There are some Water Pokémon with huge attack, like Kingler and Gyarados, huge HP, like Vaporeon and Lapras, huge defense, like Cloyster and Omastar, huge Speed, like Starmie and Tentacruel and huge Special, like Tentacruel, Omastar and Vaporeon. The majority of Water Pokémon may be 100% Water, but there a lot of Water Pokémon that have additional types like Psychic, Poison, Flying and Rock, to name a few. So Water Pokémon in general, are very different from one another. And since there is so much choice, it is often hard choosing the Water Pokémon for your team. That is what this guide is for. Splash Max Stats: HP:393 Evolution: Evolves from Magikarp at Level 20 A brutal Pokémon who can handle just about any attacking move, with is enormous Attack, and high Special. Alongside Cloyster has the best stats of all the Water Pokémon. The additional Flying type brings its strengths and weaknesses; no more weakness to Grass-type moves, resistance to Fighting and Bug moves, weakness to Rock-type moves, and the major problem, 4X weakness to Electric-type moves. Bear in mind, that Thunderbolt, an Electric-type move, is one of the most used TMs in the game, and one Thunderbolt on a Gyarados will take it down to very little health. Gyarados is also one of about 20 Pokémon that can use the move Mimic effectively. Recommended. 303 Evolution: Evolves from Shellder when a Water Stone is used on it. Cloyster has the highest defence in the entire game, as well high Attack and good Special. Cloyster does have poor HP, 303, which may cost it at times. Cloyster can have several purposes, one of which being an Anti Swift-Dancer. With 458 defence, and the ability to learn Withdraw, Cloyster can take any of a good Swift-Dancer’s attacks. Cloyster is one of about 20 Pokémon who can use the move Mimic effectively as well. 463 Evolution: None Lapras has the highest HP of all the Water Pokémon, as well as high Special and the ability to learn a wide range of moves. Naturally it learns a lot of strong and useful attacks, like Confuse Ray. When it comes to weaknesses and resistances, Lapras is no different to Cloyster and Dewgong. Highly recommended. 323 Evolution: Evolves from Staryu when a Water Stone is used on it. As well as being the quickest Water Pokémon, Starmie has, possibly, the greatest move potential of all the Water Pokémon. Starmie also has the additional bonus of being part-Psychic. This brings a resistance to Fighting and Psychic attacks, as well as Mewtwo killing potential. Highly recommended. 363 Evolution: Evolves from Tentacool at Level 30 Tentacruel has the highest special out of all the Water Pokémon, 338, and high HP, 363, and speed, 298, making him a great choice for many people. Tentacruel is part-poison; this means that Grass attacks now do normal damage, but Ground and Psychic will now do double. This is quite a problem because of the amount of Mewtwo lurking around. Apart from that, Tentacruel is a very good Pokémon, with the ability to learn Barrier to make up for his poor defence, and a wide range of special attacks do utilise that enormous special of his. 323 Evolution: Evolves from Kabuto at Level 40 Apart Kingler and Gyarados, Kabutops has the highest attack of all the Water Pokémon. One of the best things about Kabutops is its ability to learn Sword’s Dance. Accompanied with a powerful attacking move like Body Slam will yield a lot of damage. If Kabutops could learn Rock Slide, which can’t, then the amount of damage done would be devastating. Recommended. 463 Evolution: Evolves from Eevee when a Water Stone is used on it. Vaporeon tends to be overshadowed by Flareon and Jolteon, so not many people use him. With the help of Acid Armour, Vaporeon is very good at defending attacks, with huge special and HP. Haze is also a possibility and an attack which will ruin some of the best strategies around. 361 Evolution: Evolves from Wartortle at Level 36 Very average in my opinion, is Blastoise. No stats really stand out except for defence which is pretty good. Behind Charizard is the most used of the starting Pokémon by beginners. The only real good thing about Blastoise is his relatively good move potential. No comment. 343 Evolution: Evolves from Omanyte at Level 40 In my opinion, Omastar is one of the best Water Pokémon there is. With 343 HP, 348 Defence and 328 Special, he has the ability to stay in battle for an awfully long time. His poor Speed is a bit of a problem, though. 313 Evolution: Evolves from Krabby at Level 28 Kingler’s stats are extremely varied as you can see. Enormous Attack and Defence, but poor HP and Special. Speed is OK. Sword’s Dance is an absolute must on him, as he can reach 999 attack in 2 goes. The main problem with Kingler is that powerful Grass/Electric attacks will more than likely down him in one hit. 383 Please note that attacks such as Amnesia and Hydro Pump are learned by Poliwhirl who evolves into Poliwrath. Evolution: Evolves from Poliwhirl when a Water Stone is used on it. Possibly the greatest thing about Poliwrath is that naturally, he learns possibly the best moves in the game. Naturally a Poliwrath can have Hypnosis, Amnesia, Hydro Pump and Body Slam which is an excellent moveset without using any TMs whatsoever. One of the major problems of Poliwrath is its additional Fighting type, which makes it vulnerable to Psychic attacks and a few other types. Recommended. 363 Evolution: Evolves from Psyduck at Level 33. Like Blastoise, very average, but Golduck is a better choice in my opinion for one reason; Amnesia. This is one of the best moves in the game, and improves Golduck a great deal. Recommended. 383 Evolution: Evolves from Seel at Level 34. Dewgong is a very balanced Pokémon. Lapras and Cloyster may have better stats, but Dewgong is still an alternative. Higher HP and special than Cloyster, higher speed than Lapras are the main reasons. Or you might just personally think Dewgong is cooler. Recommended. 313 Evolution: Evolves from Horsea at Level 32 Seadra is one of those Water Pokémon that I’m not sure what to think of. Very good at defending attacks, with very good special and defence. As well as learning Smokescreen, Seadra isn’t that bad at all. And when G/S are released, Seadra’s G/S evolution Kingdra/Kingudora will be one the most used Pokémon out there with his improved stats and excellent Water/Dragon type. Recommended. 393 Evolution: Evolves from Slowpoke at Level 37 Rated by some to be one of the best Pokémon around, Slowbro is an excellent Water Pokémon. Although its stats are some of the lowest amongst the Water Pokémon, his amazing move potential, defence and HP more than make up for it. When given the “Tobybro” moveset, Slowbro can be indestructible. Only Pokémon like Jolteon, Venusaur and Victreebel can beat it. Highly recommended. 363 Evolution: Evolves from Goldeen at Level 33 Is there any point in using Seaking when there are way better alternatives? No, there really isn’t any point. Mediocre stats, no special moves learnt, OK TM compatibility. There is one thing unique thing about Seaking. It learns Waterfall which isn’t learnt by any other Pokémon (except Goldeen of course!). But Waterfall is useless when there’s Surf, which is more powerful, just as accurate and same PP. Not Recommended. Weaknesses: Resistances: TMs
