![]() Countering Standards Note: This guide is an updated version of a very old, but nice guide writen by Hitmonrich. In the world of Pokémon, standards have been set. Random moves are no longer thrown onto your Pokémon for no reason. There are no proven options. These Pokémon are dedicated to doing various jobs, weather it be killing Mewtwo, Swift-Dancers, or even the opponents whole team. And I am here to provide counters to all of these. Let’s take a look at the Pokémon we are aiming to defeat:
Name:
“Tobybro” the Slowbro Basically, once Toby is up and running, he is pretty much indestructible. So how do you counter him? Well, there are several ways: Game Boy:
Venusaur/Victreebel Basically, one Razor Leaf from Venusaur/Victreebel will down Toby in one hit. Pokémon Stadium: Venusaur/Victreebel Basically, one Razor Leaf from Venusaur/Victreebel will down Toby in one hit. Jolteon Thunder Wave to counter Toby’s Thunder Wave. Focus Energy to get the critical, ignoring the Amnesias. And Thunderbolt (Critical Hit, most likely) to finish him off.
Name:
“Benedict” the Exeggutor Benedict only really works on the Game Boy because of the toning down of sleep moves on Stadium. Here are some counters: Charizard/Moltres Solar Beam does 0.25 of its original damage against Fire/Flying Pokémon, so just Fire Blast/Flamethrower away! Double Team might help to prevent the Sleep Powder. Here is a list of all the other Pokémon that Solar Beam will do 0.25 damage against: Victreebel, Venusaur, Vileplume, Parasect, Butterfree, Beedrill, Golbat, Venomoth, Scyther, Dragonite So, when considering who to use against Benedict, consider these Pokémon. Especially all the Grass Pokémon, which Leech Seed will not affect. Name:
Mew The classic “Swift-Dancing” Mew. The major counter to Double Teaming. Can go through all types effectively with Swift and Earthquake. So how do you counter it when it has no weakness in stats or type? Aerodactyl The only Pokémon in which Earthquake and Swift are ineffective against. The killer would be Supersonic. When Mew is confused, a LOT of damage will be done to him because of confusion being based on Attack and Defence, and Mew being fully-Sword’s Danced. The other 3 moves should probably include Reflect making Swift do a very small amount of damage. Cloyster: 458 Defence is more than a good reason to use Cloyster to kill Mew. The moveset advised is: Clamp/Supersonic/Withdraw/Rest. Withdraw will get Cloyster up to 999 defense pretty quickly to counter Mew’s attacks. Clamp will immobolize it, preventing it to Sword’s Dance. Supersonic will have the same function it did on Aerodactyl. When Mew is fully-Sword’s Danced, and he is confused he will do a lot of damage to himself. Cloyster has pretty low HP, so Resting away any serious damage is essential. The only problem with this is that Cloyster has low HP. Charizard Reflect/Counter and 2 other moves will do the job. Reflect will prevent Swift from doing too much damage (Earthquake won’t affect him), so Counter will give back a lot of damage. All of the above strategies to counter Mew will work on both Stadium and GB.
Name:
“Grep” the Mewtwo This works on both Game Boy and Stadium, but especially well on Stadium, because paralyse can’t get through the Sub. So I’ve decided to do just the one strategy, and it is for Stadium. Electrode + Snorlax Since Electrode (Thunder Wave/Flash/Screech/Explosion is quicker than Mewtwo, you’ll be able to get the T-Wave in before he subs. Now Flash him several times, so it’s getting really hard for him to hit you. This will also help Snorlax finish off Grep. Now Screech 3 times, so that Explosion will do a hell of a lot of damage. Once you’ve Exploded and fainted bring on Snorlax. A Body Slam or Double Edge from Snorlax should be enough to finish off Mewtwo in 1 or 2 goes.
Name:
Exeggutor OK, we're looking for a Pokemon with high Special and Defense. Hmmmmm... Exeggutor: Could probably defend itself against a Standard one, as long as it can get the Sleep Powder in. Dragonite: Reasonably good Defense, Mega Drain does 1/4 damage, good Special. Getting a Blizzard in would be good. So there you
have it; simple counters to Mew, Mewtwo, Exeggutor and Slowbro. Now you
won’t find it so hard to kill these bad-ass Pokémon. |
