Ghost

Why Choose a Ghost Pokémon?: Although Ghost Pokémon are not essential they can be very useful. I myself do not currently have one in my team but on occassion I have used both Gengar and Misdreavus in serious teams. They have worked well for me, particularly Misdreavus.

- Resistances: Dark, Steel

- Immunities: Normal

Lick, 20 power, 99.6% accuracy, 29.7% chance of paralyzing

Almost Useless although quite good chance of Paralysis. Not recommended.

Night Shade, deals 1HP/level damage, 99.6% accuracy

A great attack for a Pokémon that's on its last legs. Recommended on most Pokémon that can learn it, especially if they have a good Attack stat. Some Pokémon, like Snorlax, can learn Self-Destruct, but not Explosion. Self-Destruct is identical to Explosion, except it only has 260 Power. Self-Destruct is still as highly recommended as Explosion.

Shadow Ball, 80 power, 99.6% accuracy, 19.5% chance of lowering Special Defense

As it has such a high critical hit rate, it really has about 140 power, making it very powerful. It also disregards Barrier, Reflect and Acid Armor.

Confuse Ray, 99.6% accuracy, confuses opponent

Great. Learnt by many other Pokémon than ghosts. Used in many, many teams. Confusion can be extremely helpful.

  Ghastly

Seeing as this is the first stage of the Ghastly > Haunter > Gengar Evolutionary Series, you probably wouldn't think you would need to use Ghastly in series battles. Yeah, well you're probably right. Ghastly stats suck. However for little cup matches he can prove quite useful, with moves such as Destiny Bond, Hypnosis, Perish Song, Mean Look and Psychic. Also if used right Curse can be of good use to a ghastly e.g. you could use it if you have a minty rest ready and the other Pokémon is asleep, probably from a Hypnosis. Toxic Curse and Mean Look as a combo can also be extremely effective, trapping the Pokémon and then damaging it slowly. You would probably want Rest as your last move on that moveset seeing as you would need to recover from the Curse. Ghastly is perhaps also a good Hazer too. Thunderbolt can also make a good counter for Water Pokémon you may encounter. Confuse Ray can also be useful.

    Haunter

Pretty much the same as Ghastly moves wise. Explosion may be slightly more useful because of slightly higher attack power. However my main piece of advice is to EVOLVE the thing. Gengar is pretty darn good, many use him in their first team. Even on Newbie sites I haven't seen a Haunter in a Rate my team Thread (I think :P). Haunter is a prime example of how much the game developers dislike borgeoisie Pokémon. They make a cool Pokémon like Ghastly for the first stage, a pretty good and strong Pokémon for the final stage and a sucky Pokémon for the middle stage. Mind you on Pokémon Yellow Haunter looks leet in my opinion.

    Gengar

Unlike it's two lesser evolved counterparts, Gengar is damn good. Although it's only move which is Ghost type and worthwhile looking at is Shadow Ball (Ghost type attacks are attack based XD, look at it's attack rating :P) it can use many other great moves. A very big plus point for Gengar is the fact that it can learn Ice Punch, which really helps against ground types. Of course being part poison (Like it's two earlier evolutions) it has a big disadvantage there seeing as most teams will pack a Psychic. A lot of teams will also pack a dark type Pokémon, so just make sure you pack a fighting type Pokémon and a Dark Type Pokémon in your team for cover. Gengar can do everything that Ghastly can too. It can be a trapper, toxic/curse or perish song. It can be a good bi or tri elemental attacker (possibly a sweeper), with Moves like Thunderbolt, Ice Punch and Giga Drain it can even thanks to Destiny Bond be an opener. Many people use one on their team and it is very versatile. The moveset I would probably use is Thunderbolt, Ice Punch, Rest and Destiny Bond with a Mint Berry for an opener; Toxic, Psychic, Rest and Mean Look as a trapper or Explosion, Seismic Toss, Ice Punch and Attract as a very annoying Pokémon that can take out Alakazam as a nasty surpirse. But seeing as their are so many possible combinations the choice is yours. Note: To get a Gengar you need to trade Haunter.

    Misdreavus

Misdreavus' main purpose generally is to Mean Look and perish Song with two back up moves. However the popularity of Suicune with Roar has led some trainers to put Thunderbolt on their Misdreavus. In my opinion Misdreavus needs to be a Mean Look/ Perish Songer. Anyway the two other moves should be one of these: Rest, Pain Split, Thunderbolt, Confuse Ray and Protect. Misdreavus is also a very popular Pokémon so I suggest that you have at least one Roarer or Whirlwinder.
